Homework 8. game analyze

The game we developed: Stop Watch Blue

1) the Tetrad:
1. Story: The game is happened in a dream world where the character was trapped in his own dream and trying to find a way to break out. He found a Stop Watch which can stop time and saw a clock tower far away, so he decide to explore the clock tower, because he think he can find some answer inside the clock tower.

2. the Technology:

Modern but abstract since we are inside the player’s mind. Levels will be based on real places from the player’s memories but different things will be exaggerated almost like in Alice in Wonderland. The player have a stop watch which can stop the movement of single object or all of the object in the dream world.

3. Athetic: Dark colors and harsh shading. Things get lighter as the player progresses through the story but they never become cheerful. It’s a dismal place inside this mind and the decor reflects this. The sound can come from the sound we hear everyday, like a the sound of a cloud of people, the sound of traffic, but they are twisted and like the sound from far away.

4. the Mechanism:

Time manipulation. Player can freeze moving objects. This can be achieved by stop or accelerate the movement/condition changing of other objects except the player. The stop watch can be used to stop the movement of single object, and the player also have other skill to stop the movement of everything, but the thing which has been stopped by the player before will turn back to move. The player should also be able to pick up items which are necessary for the continuation of story line.

2) Balance: Although the time stopping ability sounds powerful, the levels also have considerable difficulty to make sure that there are also challenges exist. The stop watch was programmed to make sure that it can only stop one object at a time, and there are also time limitation to the global time stop to make sure that the player will not be too powerful.

3) Emergent properties: The player can explore and play with time stopping mechanism and fill the sense of achievement of managing the surrounding environment around them. There will also be multiple ways to solve one puzzle, which can make the game more diverse.

4) Interesting curve: The game should be easy to learn since all of the operation is based on the stop watch. We will not have complicate huds in the game, instead, we used the two hands of the watch to indicate the time stopping. There will be a tutorial level to help player get used to the mechanism before solving puzzles. Also at the higher level, the challenges also exist to keep player interested in the game.

5) I like our game because it have a very unique mechanism which can make the game stand out among other games, also the puzzles relative to the mechanism can be made very interesting, and the player will have a new experience of interacting with the environment.

Homework: The game I like/ dislike

The game I like:

League of Legends

1) the Tetrad:
1. Story: the story of League of Legends happened in a fantasy world – the world of ruin, where the abusing of magic and technology  have lead to some serious conflict between countries which eventually lead to wars. To solve the conflicts, the League of Legends were found in which each country or organization can sent its strongest worrier to fight with each other, and solve the conflicts based on the result of fighting. Although no detailed story line of this competition game is necessary, and It will not influence the big picture of the game, the story line do make the game more interesting. Different heroes also have their own story, and story between each other, which will make player more attached to the heroes.

2. the Technology: In the game, many different technologies were used depend on different heroes- some of them using magical powers, some of them using some legendary equipment , some of them using their tooth or craws to fight, there also champion using some high-tech machine they invented to fight. The technology is very diverse in this game

3.  Athetic: the art of League of Legends makes people fill relaxing. It make people fill like they are in a fantasy world, since the plant, the animals on the map, if you take a closer look, can all show some clue that they can use magic somehow. The developer also change the Athetic occasionally to meet certain season or festival (Halloween for example ) to give player new experience. The player can also decide the style of their own hero by using different texture provided in the game.

4. the Mechanism: For each battle, each player can choose a different hero, and people play 5 Vs 5. Each hero have 5 skills which can be learned or enhanced at certain level. Kill the enemy’s minion or hero can gain the experience and gold. Gold can be used to by equipment to enhance the ability of hero.
This mechanism can let player build their hero in different direction and make game more diverse.

2) Balance: Although each hero in League of Legends has more than 100 unique heroes, and they are aimed to do different jobs for the team, such as dealing damage, control, tank and support, they are overall balanced. The way the Rot company did is that they get the feed back from player and system statistic, and then update the game very frequently.

3) Emergent properties: This is the most amazing part in the game League of Legends. There are more than 100 heroes provided so far. The combo between each heroes and each heroes best/ worst against needs players to find out based on experience. The game also requires the interaction with other players, in which the friendship can form if you win a hard battle with the help of your team member.

4)  Interesting curve: Because it is 5 Vs 5 game and there are more than 100 different heroes, so there will be 10^100 different kinds of combination, which means it will not likely to have two similar game. So player will never feel bored by the game. And also the new heroes are keep coming out and a reasonable pace to make sure players are interested in the game.

5) As described above, I like the game because it have amazing tetrad, which balanced with each other. The heroes in the game is also balanced. People can build on friendship and discover interesting combo between heroes and also the game can make the player keep interested in the game.

The game I dislike:

Online Chess

1) the Tetrad:
1. Story: No story line is provided.

2. Technology: There are 6 different pieces, each have unique way to move, pieces can kill an enemy pieces by touch.

3. Athetic: each different pieces only have very simplified modeling ( many are even 2D), the color is black and white for the pieces and chess board, which is not cool. Many of them don’t have music or any sound effect

4. Mechanism: In each turn each player can and must move one piece, player will lose when the king is dead.

2)Balanced: It is well balanced between players, although it takes no effort to keep that balance. The difference between the pieces, however is significant.

3)Emergent property: can interact and communicate with your opponent, but in most of the time your opponent will be very annoying. Sometimes you can find some certain strategy which can makes you feel great.

4)Interesting curve: To my understanding it do not have a very high interesting curve for most of people, because the start of every game is the same and there is not many freedom or randomness in this game. There is no tuition levels to let the beginner to build on their skill and if they were bitten by some experienced guy, they will feel defeated intellectually and hate this game and never play again.

5)As described above, I don’t like Online Chess because its poorly developed Tetrad, and also there are not so many emergent properties if you are not that good at chess. This game can definitely not make player interested in it if one have not played any chess before.
